Sukanya awarded Grant for the Arts

In 2017, Sinfonia Verdi's Artistic Director David Murphy completed Ravi Shankar’s opera Sukanya which was a large-scale work for 100 performers.

Ravi Shankar envisaged for David to create flexible orchestrations of his only opera so that it could be performed by a wide range of ensembles in venues ranging from village halls to amphitheatres.

David has secured funding from Arts Council England to develop the work and to reach a large number of young people through education and outreach activities based on the vibrant rhythmic material in the work.

Working with the highest quality South Asian musicians, David will fulfil Ravi Shankar’s vision of making Sukanya accessible to as many people as possible.

Building on Sinfonia Verdi’s recent work with promoters and young people in Luton, Slough and Leicester, David will create music resources focussing on artistic collaboration between cultures that are particularly relevant to these towns and the young people that are their future.
